Repetition
of practices is called habit. We all have inherited or accumulated or pinched habits from someone else, our parents, our siblings, our peers, and until we do something different, we are stuck with them.Can you imagine, if your father had told you you weren't good enough because you didn't get straight As every time, that you internalised that thought and it became yours - and habit. It possibly happened at least once every day , since you were about 7 years of age, let's say. So by the time you were 21 you would have heard this 14 X 365 times. And that's quite a lot.
So through repetition, if you want to shift this thought, you have to first cancel it and then feed in the new thought at least as many times as 5,110 !
